Big and Small Cities

Boston, one of the most famous cities in the Northeast of the United States, has a long history and strong economic development. As the city with a mass of colleges and employments, Boston has a diverse population, which includes 44.4% White, 22.4% Black or African American, and 20% Hispanic or Latino. Compared to the city where I’ve lived for four years, East Lansing, Boston’s diversity has made me feel the charm of a big city. East Lansing as the capital city of Michigan, has an uneven population. It has 74% of the White population, with 12% Asian and 7.56% Black or African American.

From the data analysis, East Lansing’s economy is far below the development of Boston. However, it is undeniable that the growth rate of East Lansing cannot be ignored. In particular, East Lansing’s median household income is 9.6%, which is 2% higher than in Boston. Moreover, the two cities have in common that the highest paid race/ethnicity of Michigan or Massachusetts workers were Asian. Among them, Asian workers in East Lansing were paid 1.28 times more than the second-highest salary of race/ethnicity group.

In the survey, the industries with the most workforces in East Lansing are Education Instruction, & Library Occupations (3,722 people), Food Preparation & Serving Related Occupations (2,980 people), and Office & Administrative Support Occupations (2,738 people). And Boston are Office & Administrative Support Occupations (42,892 people), Management Occupations (39,703 people), and Sales & Related Occupations (33,965 people).

In addition to wages and jobs, educational services are the largest industries in both areas, which are also the reason that affects the population of the two cities. Michigan State University, as the main university in East Lansing, has 13,044 degrees awarded in 2017; while there are many schools in the Boston area, which have an average degree awarded. The two cities have a big gap, but also have a lot of similarities, which enrich the diversity of the city.
